Repairs made to the Forge in 2025

Open most Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the fiery forge at the blacksmith shop attracts those eager to learn the craft of smithing and observers from near and far to observe the smiths at work.

But late in 2025, the Ralph Madara Blacksmith Shop was closed for three months over the winter for repairs: an inspection revealed that the firepot was cracked and a new one was needed.

Karen Sims researched, found and paid for the replacement firepot. In Februry, Chip Sowalski, head smith from the Mystic Seaport and head smith Philip Medbery installed it.  New mortar was needed to surround and secure the firepot in place.  Phil and Chip also renewed and repaired the blower assembly. Enjoy this slide show of the repair process.
